Brunch with Benedict: St. Francis and St. Clare of Assisi

Bring your faith formation out of the classroom and into the kitchen with our Brunch with Benedict boxes! Developed by Dr. Amanda Drury of Discipleship by Design (also the mastermind behind Ripple Effect, Whoopsie!, and Blow up Your Idea) these meal kit-meets-Sunday school lesson boxes are meant to engage families or small groups in meaningful discussion, learning, and reflection inspired by the life of one of the saints, as they prepare a food inspired by that saint’s life or legacy together.

This box is built around St. Frances and St. Claire of Assisi (13th century). St. Francis of Assisi left a life of wealth to follow a call he received from God to “rebuild the church.” He repaired churches all over the Italian countryside as he preached about God’s love for all living creatures, and especially the poor. He gained thousands of followers, joining his vows to service and poverty, who called themselves “Franciscans.” Among those followers, was young Clare, who ran away from home at 14 to join the monastery. She helped establish an order of women following the Franciscan vows, and wrote the first “rule” or way of life for women following St. Francis.

Participants are invited to bake Pasteis de Santa Clara (St. Clare Turnovers). Invented by nuns from St. Clare convent in Portugal, the recipe became popular with students and was brought with Portuguese and Spanish migrants to Brazil where it is popular to this day.
