Brunch with Benedict: St. Benedict and St. Scholastica

Bring your faith formation out of the classroom and into the kitchen with our Brunch with Benedict boxes! Developed by Dr. Amanda Drury of Discipleship by Design (also the mastermind behind Ripple Effect, Whoopsie!, and Blow up Your Idea) these meal kit-meets-Sunday school lesson boxes are meant to engage families or small groups in meaningful discussion, learning, and reflection inspired by the life of one of the saints, as they prepare a food inspired by that saint’s life or legacy together.

This box is built around St. Benedict and St. Scholastica. St. Benedict helped establish the first monastic order in the 5th century, with St. Scholastica, his twin sister establishing an order of what we would now call nuns. St. Benedict established a strict set of rules for living that challenged Monks and continues to provide an example of what devotion to Christ looks like for those living in monastic communities, and for us.

Participants are invited to bake Nun’s Puffs. This recipe dates to hundreds of years before St. Benedict and St. Scholastica were born, its earliest version was found in a cookbook from 25 BC! However, as Sts. Benedict and Scholastica were crucial in founding the formation of monastic life as we know it, it seems a fitting treat to make in their honor.
